Air Yards Definition
A simple way to measure the depth of a passing opportunity.
Air Yards measure the distance a pass travels forward from the line of scrimmage to its intended target.
Air Yards do not include yards gained after the catch. They describe the depth of the passing attempt before the receiver secures the football—or before the pass falls incomplete.
How Air Yards Are Calculated
Each target contributes positive, zero, or negative Air Yards.
Downfield Target
A pass targeted 20 yards beyond the line of scrimmage produces 20 Air Yards for the intended receiver.
Short Target
A pass thrown five yards beyond the line of scrimmage produces five Air Yards.
Behind-the-Line Target
Screens and passes caught behind the line of scrimmage can produce negative Air Yards.
Incomplete Pass
The intended receiver can still receive Air Yards even when the pass is not completed.
Air Yards Versus Receiving Yards
The two metrics describe different parts of the same passing play.
Air Yards
Measure how far the pass travels before reaching the intended receiver.
Receiving Yards
Measure the total yards credited after a completed catch, including yards gained after the catch.
Yards After Catch
Measure the portion of receiving yards gained after the receiver secures the football.
Incomplete Opportunity
Air Yards preserve evidence of downfield opportunity even when the target does not become a reception.

Total volume and average depth should be evaluated together.
Total Air Yards
Add all target distances together to measure total downfield opportunity over a game or sample.
Average Depth of Target
Divides total Air Yards by targets to estimate the typical depth of each opportunity.
High Volume, Short Depth
A receiver can accumulate targets while primarily operating in short and intermediate areas.
Low Volume, Deep Role
A receiver can receive fewer targets while still carrying meaningful downfield upside.
Air Yards Example
Why equal target totals do not always represent equal opportunity.
Receiver A records 120 Air Yards while Receiver B records 35 Air Yards.
Receiver A is being used farther downfield and may need fewer catches to produce a large receiving-yardage result. Receiver B may have a shorter-area role that depends more heavily on reception volume and yards after the catch.
What Changes a Player’s Air Yards?
Target depth is influenced by the player, quarterback, offense, and defense.
Route Tree
Go routes, posts, corners, and deep crossers create more Air Yards than screens and short curls.
Quarterback Tendencies
Arm strength, aggressiveness, timing, and accuracy influence how often deep targets are attempted.
Offensive Scheme
Play calling and formation design determine which players receive vertical opportunities.
Defensive Coverage
Safety depth, cornerback leverage, and coverage structure can encourage or limit downfield passing.
Pressure, Protection, and Air Yards
Deep routes require enough time for the play to develop.
Pass Protection
Strong protection gives quarterbacks more time to wait for downfield routes to open.
Defensive Pressure
Frequent pressure can force quicker throws before deeper routes complete their development.
Scramble Extension
